    The 2011-12 State Budget was formally adopted by both the House and Senate on June 29. It is House Bill 1485.

    The education line items can be found on pages 229 through 240. The spending numbers approved for these line items match the spreadsheet found here (look for the Department of Education pages starting on Line 198).

    Knowing that the start of the Corbett Administration is a good time to take inventory of the education reforms that would make the biggest difference for disadvantaged students and schools, the Education Law Center has drafted a list of ideas for improving education policies and practices around the state.

    The PA Senate Education Committee will meet and discuss House Bill 704, a piece of legislation that would create new state laws for special education funding and accountability. At this open hearing, Rep. Sturla (our lead sponsor) will testify and present the bill to the Committee for consideration.

    Pennsylvania’s program of alternative education for disruptive youth (“AEDY”) is at a crossroads. Created about fifteen years ago, the program has grown dramatically, to the point that it now serves some 30,000 students in 614 locations – the equivalent of the third-largest school district in the state. In recent years, moreover, the Pennsylvania Department of Education has taken significant steps to increase its support to, and oversight of, these programs.

    School should be challenging; enrolling in school shouldn't be.  Over the past year, the Education law Center has taken on several projects with the common goal of improving Pennsylvania enrollment policies and guidance, and educating districts about those policies so that students can enroll more easily and start learning sooner.

    In November 2009, ELC Co-Director Len Reiser presented at a conference on Education Excellence for Latino Students in Lancaster alongside Carmen Rowe from the Lancaster School District. The presentation covered Pennsylvania educational policies relating to English Language Learners.
